april - die vierte schau

LILLI KUSCHEL & MIKKO GAESTEL // SARA LEHN & GREG MCLAREN // YULIA LOKSHINA & JULIAN BOGENFELD // CLARA BAUSCH // FLORIAN BARON //THOMAS MORITZ HELM

Five films and one slide show successively projected in different places of the exhibition space and loosely bound together by Bunuel’s „Phantom of Libety“:
We start by watching Mikko Gaestel and Lilli Kuschels’s observation of sunbathers at the bank of the river Neva in St. Petersburg. Although there is no choreography, the individuals seem to be associated with each other in a both absurd and conventional dance.

The next piece of work is an animated film by Clara Bausch, assembling thousands of newspaper excerpts - photographed against the light in order to make them transparent - arranged by the CMYK color model instead of their written content. Accompanied by lines from different films, the images dash through the screen, giving the viewer no time to dwell on them. The work is projected on an empty sheet of newspaper hanging in front of a wall, letting the light of the projection permeate it - just as the individual images from the film.

Yulia Lokshina and Julian Bogenfeld show an excerpt of their documentary „Home“, dealing with jewish Russians in Israeli exile. We watch uncle Michail prepare a carp-soup while giving a resumé of his life: „Damn it! The drain is blocked again. If I believed in God, I’d only have to pray and He would clean the whole thing up for me in a jiffy.“

Following this, we see  „Invocation of Pseudo Magic“ by Sara Lehn and Greg McLaren. Without any apparent logic, absurd scenes are bound together, interlacing Super 8 material from the flee-market and creating a peculiar atmosphere with the underlying music, composed by the artists.
Sara Lehn and Greg McLaren : “Friedrich the Big or Kenneth Anger -  their techniques of using without sorrow the symbolics of past high-cultures to invoke old auras subject each other in nothing, Kitsch or superimposition. Despite endless repetition of symbolism and aesthetic cults they stay inaccessible for most, be it white or black magic, art or religion or any other lifestyle. Join us in being magic-onlookers and aura-tourists, at least the music is for you, we made it.”

The light is switched on and Thomas Moritz Helm begins - laptop in hand - with his slide show on his first journey to the United States in 2003. By showing us pictures of a monstrous US flag hoisted upon a sex shop in the desert, impressions of a gay parade and his encounter with a black woman in a pink nighty in Reno wanting him to shoot nudes of her for money, Thomas unfolds his personal experience with all possible kinds of platitudes about the US in an ambivalent, provocative but deeply ironic way.

Finally, Florian Baron’s installation lets the viewer dip into the psychedelic world of fractal camera images: A camera films it’s own projection thereby creating a visual feedback. A special function lets the camera produce fractals of the motif which - due to the feeback - are multiplied infinitely. This causes the projection to always be in movement, creating dazzling colors. Additionally, the viewer can change the image by holding different objects - crystal glasses, bottles, dvds etc. - into the projection.
